This is a combinatorial generator rather than a picker, and the distinction matters: it is not selecting from a list of stories, it is building one from parts that were written to be recombined.

Some combinations will be nonsense. That is the arithmetic of independent slots and it is worth knowing before you conclude the generator is broken.

How the Story Prompt Generator works — and why it's fair

Each of the three slots draws independently and uniformly from its own list of sixteen. Because the draws are independent, the output space is the product — sixteen cubed, which is 4,096 distinct seeds — and every one of them is equally likely.

Independence is what produces the volume, and it is also what produces the nonsense. The generator has no model of which characters suit which settings, so a competitive beekeeper in an unfinished motorway is exactly as likely as a lighthouse keeper on an island. Roughly one seed in five will be incoherent, and the standard working method is to redraw one slot rather than all three.

The parts were written for recombination rather than as fragments of specific stories. Each character is an occupation with a built-in tension, each setting is a place with a deadline or a decline already in it, and each complication is a change of state rather than an event — which is what makes most pairings productive rather than merely odd.

There is no weighting and no filtering. Every character is as likely as every other, and there is no way to exclude a slot value you have already used or do not like. Adding a no-repeat cycle would have made the tool feel curated, which is the opposite of what a prompt generator should feel like.

The combination count is worth stating because it is the honest answer to whether a writer will exhaust this. At one seed a day, 4,096 combinations is over eleven years — though the practical number is lower, since a writer will recognise the individual parts long before they exhaust the pairings.

Nothing is stored. Redrawing loses the previous seed, so write down anything you want to keep before you press again.

Prompts that force a decision

Writing practice is the direct use, and the value comes from the constraint rather than from the quality of any individual seed. A writer who did not choose the setting has to make it work, which produces choices they would not have made.

Teaching creative writing uses it to remove the blank page, which is the actual obstacle for most students. A specific character in a specific place with a specific problem is a far easier starting point than an open brief.

Roleplaying game preparation uses the seeds as scenario hooks, where the incoherent combinations are often the most useful — a premise that does not obviously make sense is a premise that needs explaining, and the explanation is the adventure.
