Five tools built around memory and rotation rather than one-off draws. That is the distinction that puts them in their own category: everywhere else on this site, each draw is independent and the tool has no idea what it did last time. Here, what happened before is the point.
The reason is that a classroom or a recurring meeting is judged across a term rather than across a moment. A teacher who cold-calls with an independent draw is being perfectly fair every single lesson and will still leave a third of the class unasked by half term, because independence does not produce coverage. Those are different guarantees and only one of them is what anybody actually wanted.
So several tools here deliberately break the equal-chance promise the rest of the site makes. A no-repeat cycle draws from a shrinking pool: the first call of a thirty-name roster is one in thirty and the last is a certainty. That is a real change in the odds, it is stated on every page that does it, and the count is shown on screen rather than hidden.
The others rotate rather than remember. A seat rotation is a derangement of the previous layout, a facilitator order is a cycle with a randomised start, and a lunch pairing excludes last round's partners. In each case the randomness is doing a smaller job than it looks — breaking ties and setting a starting point — while the structure does the work.

Coverage, and why it beats equal chances here
The arithmetic is worth doing once because it settles the design question. Cold-call once per lesson with an independent draw from a class of thirty, over thirty lessons: the expected number of students never called is thirty multiplied by twenty-nine thirtieths to the power thirty, which is about eleven. More than a third of the class has said nothing, while somebody has been called four times.
That is not a defect in the picker. It is what independent selection means, and it defeats the reason a teacher introduced a mechanism in the first place — which was to reach the students who do not volunteer, not to be procedurally impeccable about the ones who do.
A no-repeat cycle guarantees the opposite: every student is called exactly once before any student is called twice. The cost is that the odds within a cycle are unequal and rising, and a sharp student near the end of a cycle can work out that they are nearly certain to be called. That is a genuine trade and it is almost always the right one for a classroom.
The one gap the guarantee does not cover is the cycle boundary. A student called at the end of one cycle can be called at the start of the next — two lessons running, from a tool advertised as not repeating. That affects roughly one student per boundary and is documented rather than fixed, because constraining across boundaries tightens the problem for no benefit.
Rotation: seats, order and pairings
The seat rotation tool exists because a fresh random plan is not a rotation. Reshuffling a class leaves, on average, exactly one student in their previous seat — and that expectation is exactly one whether the class is ten students or three hundred, which is one of the more surprising results in elementary probability. That one student will point it out.
A derangement guarantees that nobody keeps their previous seat, and it is found by randomised restart in about three attempts on average, because roughly thirty-seven percent of all shuffles happen to be derangements. The guarantee is strictly against the immediately previous layout: somebody can return to a seat they had three rotations ago, and tracking the full history would tighten the constraint until it became unsatisfiable.
The standup order picker adds arithmetic to a plain shuffle. It divides your meeting length minus a reserve by the number of speakers and prints the per-person budget, which is usually the revelation rather than the ordering — a team that has grown to fourteen people is frequently unaware it has budgeted fifty seconds each. Below about forty-five seconds the tool warns, because that is where people compress by dropping their blockers and keeping their status, which is the wrong half to keep.
The lunch partner picker is the most constrained tool in the category: it pairs people while avoiding both same-team pairings and last round's partners, and when both rules cannot be satisfied it drops the cross-team rule and says so. That fallback order encodes a judgement — pairing two colleagues is mildly disappointing, and pairing the same two people twice is the failure that makes people stop participating.
Two independent draws, combined
The retro topic picker draws a format and a prompt separately, which multiplies eight formats and twelve prompts into ninety-six combinations. Two small maintainable lists produce the variety that ninety-six hand-written session plans would, and they stay individually editable in a way a corpus of ninety-six would not.
Locking the format makes the second draw conditional rather than removing it, which drops the pool from ninety-six to twelve and makes repeats arrive about eight times faster. That is what most teams settle into after a few sprints, and it is a reasonable place to land — the format is a structure worth keeping once it fits, and the prompt is what stops it becoming a ritual nobody hears.
There is deliberately no no-repeat memory here, unlike the cold-call picker. A retro format that comes up twice running is fine and a prompt worth revisiting is worth revisiting, and adding a cycle would imply the tool is working through a curriculum it does not have.
The limitation every tool here shares
Everything that remembers, remembers in one browser on one device. It does not sync, it does not survive a private window, and it is lost if site data is cleared. That is a direct consequence of this site having no accounts and no server, which is a constraint we are not going to relax — the proposition is that nothing you type goes anywhere, and a synced cycle would require both.
The practical implication for a teacher relying on a cycle across a term is to use the same browser on the same machine, and to know that this is the failure mode before September rather than in November. Every page that uses the memory says so in a box under the tool rather than in a footnote.
Editing the roster starts a fresh cycle, because a partially completed cycle over a different list is not meaningfully partial. Get the spellings right in week one — a correction in week six costs you the term's progress.
