Cold-Calling a Class of 30
The problem is participation across a term, not fairness in one lesson.
A classroom draw is the one case on this site where equal odds are the wrong goal: what a teacher needs is that every student is asked before any student is asked twice, which is a coverage guarantee, not a fairness one.

The tool is the easy part. The thirty seconds around each draw is where cold-calling either works or turns a quiet student into a more anxious one.
Draw last, not first
The single highest-value habit costs nothing: ask the question, give the whole class explicit thinking time, and only then draw a name. Everybody prepares an answer and the draw decides who says it.
Drawing first inverts the activity. One student is now under a spotlight while twenty-nine watch, and the twenty-nine have no reason to think about the question at all — which removes the participation benefit that was the reason for using a picker.
Thirty seconds of thinking time feels long from the front and is not long from a desk. Counting it silently rather than judging it by feel is worth doing for the first few weeks.
- Ask the question to the whole room.
- Give explicit thinking time — say the number of seconds out loud.
- Draw the name.
- Give a beat before expecting the answer to start.
What to do when a student freezes
Some proportion of draws will land on somebody who cannot answer, and how that is handled is what the rest of the class learns from.
A pass that ends the interaction teaches avoidance: the student learns that saying nothing works, and the next draw on them will go the same way. A pass with an explicit return — I will come back to you in a minute — keeps the expectation without the pressure of the moment.
Permission to confer with a neighbour before answering is the other cheap intervention, and it changes the failure mode entirely. A student who can check with the person next to them is answering with support rather than being examined.
Telling the class how it works
Explain the cycle once, at the start of term, and then point at the counter rather than re-explaining. A visible shrinking pool answers the fairness question in a way that no verbal assurance does, and it answers it every lesson rather than once.
Be straightforward that the odds change through a cycle. A student will work it out, and having been told in advance is a completely different experience from discovering it and concluding they were misled.
The one thing worth saying explicitly is what happens at a cycle boundary, because that is where the apparent unfairness lives. Somebody will be asked at the end of one cycle and the start of the next, and knowing it is possible in advance defuses it.
Practical setup that survives a term
Use one browser on one machine and do not change it. The cycle does not follow you, and discovering that in November after half a term of progress is the most avoidable disappointment on this page.
Get the register right in week one. Correcting a spelling later resets the cycle, and the reset is silent — the tool simply starts again rather than warning you.
Check the count the tool reports against your actual class size before you start. A pasted register with a duplicated line gives that student two turns per cycle, which is occasionally intentional and usually a paste error.
